EDUCATION

  • 2008-2011 PhD in English Philology, Chair of English Linguistics, University of Augsburg,
Thesis Title: Flattering and Flaming. Interpersonal Relations in Online Message Boards,
Predicate: summa cum laude, Supervisors: Prof. em. Dr. Wolfram Bublitz, Prof. em. Dr. Dieter Götz, Prof. em. Dr. Reinhold Werner

    Brief Synopsis of Research:
In bringing together methods and insights from interpersonal pragmatics and computer-mediated communication, my thesis investigated the establishment and negotiation of face claims and the entire panoply of interpersonal relations in a British online message board. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of a corpus of approx. 300,000 words showed that users dispose of a wide range of (multimodal) options for the display of face claims and interpersonal relations. Behavior among message board interlocutors was proven to be predominantly unmarked and thus perfectly appropriate, with comparatively few cases of rude behavior or flaming.
